This aide-mémoire is not a lesson on sedimentary dynamics but more of a calculation form. Its use implies a good knowledge of the involved processes. This report presents the basic formulations used for the calculation of the hydrodynamic forcings as well as the main sediment behavioural laws, in order to help the reader conduct a basic sediment transportation calculation.

An Assessment of the Precision and Confidence of Aquatic Eddy Correlation Measurements ArchiMer

The quantification of benthic fluxes with the aquatic eddy correlation (EC) technique is based on simultaneous measurement of the current velocity and a targeted bottom water parameter (e.g., O2, temperature). High-frequency measurements (64 Hz) are performed at a single point above the seafloor using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) and a fast-responding sensor. The advantages of aquatic EC technique are that 1) it is noninvasive, 2) it integrates fluxes over a large area, and 3) it accounts for in situ hydrodynamics. Atmospheric response to sea surface temperature mesoscale structures ArchiMer

Recent studies have revealed that strong sea surface temperature (SST) fronts, on the scale of a Western Boundary Current, significantly affect not just the Marine Boundary Layer but the entire troposphere. This has aroused renewed interest in air-sea interactions. The present study investigates the atmospheric response to fixed SST anomalies associated with mesoscale oceanic eddies and submesoscale filaments, using idealized simulations. Our main result is that in weak wind conditions, the vertical velocity in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) is linearly proportional to the SST Laplacian. Effects of pressure ridge sheltering on the spatial and temporal variability of boundary layer stability under first year sea ice ArchiMer

We present series of data describing the small-scale structure of the boundary layer stratification in the vicinity and away from a 1.5 m pressure ridge keel. We then analyze the influence of pressure ridges on the spatial and temporal variability of the ocean boundary layer Our experiment was done during the melt in order to use small-scale salinity gradients to study the variability in intensity of mixing processes. Effects of the submesoscale on the potential vorticity budget of ocean mode waters ArchiMer

Non-conservative processes change the potential vorticity (PV) of the upper ocean, and later, through the subduction of surface waters into the interior, affect the general ocean circulation. Here we focus on how boundary layer turbulence, in the presence of submesoscale horizontal buoyancy gradients, generates a source of potential vorticity at the ocean surface through a balance known as the Turbulent ThermalWind. This source of PV injection at the submesoscale can be of similar magnitude to PV fluxes from the wind and surface buoyancy fluxes, and hence can lead to a net injection of PV onto outcropped isopycnals even during periods of surface buoyancy loss. Experimental and numerical characterization of an oyster farm impact on the flow ArchiMer

Shellfish farming, particularly oyster farms, suffers from strong siltation phenomena which are harmful to the production of shellfish. The lack of knowledge about the impact of an oyster farm on the wave propagation and on the flow remains a significant difficulty for the comprehension of sediment transport processes in coastal zones. These effects are one of the possible sources of sedimentation. Oyster farming structures are artificial obstacles which disturb tidal flow and wave propagation. These effects can induce modifications of erosion and sedimentation patterns, turbidity changes, local silting up and can be threatening for the shellfish farming itself. The understanding of the impact of these structures in terms of hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the far-field, i.e. at the scale of a bay, is a very challenging task. Measurements of Enhanced Near-Surface Turbulence Under Windrows ArchiMer

Observations of waves, winds, turbulence, and the geometry and circulation of windrows were made in a shallow bay in the winter of 2018 outside of Rimouski, Québec. Water velocities measured from a forward-looking pulse-coherent ADCP mounted on a small zodiac show spanwise (cross-windrow) convergence, streamwise (downwind) velocity enhancement, and downwelling in the windrows, consistent with the view that windrows are the result of counter-rotating pairs of wind-aligned vortices. Surface Roughness Imaging of Currents Shows Divergence and Strain in the Wind Direction ArchiMer

Images of sea surface roughness-for example, obtained by synthetic aperture radars (SAR) or by radiometers viewing areas in and around the sun glitter-at times provide clear observations of meso- and sub-mesoscale oceanic features. Interacting with the surface wind waves, particular deformation properties of surface currents are responsible for those manifestations. Ignoring other sources of surface roughness variations, the authors limit their discussion to the mean square slope (mss) variability.
